Escambia County Sheriff

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan spoke last night at Seville Rotary about his views of government and how choices we make today voting for the new charter will effect us for decades to come. I found him incredibly articulate and truthful realizing that Pensacola is not a sleepy little town anymore it's a growing metropolis. His advise was to be aware of the choices you make and get to know your neighbors. Of course he is the sheriff so I would expect him to say that but it's true to the fact that in the last few years Pensacola has propelled forward with many projects. The Maritime Project, Expansion of UWF, the new charter, moving the sewer plant, adding onto the airport, investigating the potential with the port etc etc. These are huge undertaking with money from government, private sector and even the residents. It's apparent we want change and that is exactly what we'll get....

Pensacola won't be decking the halls for Christmas

No Christmas this year am I hearing you right? I think the Downtown Improvement Board is missing the boat by announcing it would rather save the money to spend on things that "move the city forward then decorate for Christmas". In fact, I'm very upset...All year I have noticed positive change. Palafox traffic picks up with transforming the one-way street into two-way avenue. Hop Jack's pizzeria, Will Call and the new blues bar have brought the young people to the heart of the city... I think it's expected of the city in these hard times to be the 'Santa Claus' brininging family and friends together to celebrate Christmas in 2009. It's just sad because finally we have gotten the people to come to the downtown enjoy the restaurants, shops, history...no Christmas announcement in the Pensacola News Journal bad decision.

Santa Rosa Island – Girl behind the Name

Today we have a special treat from my dear friend Terrell F. Solana whom I call the Strong Street Historian.

What does a fiery teen-age girl who lived over 700 years ago, fought against family, friends and government for what she believed in, have in common with Santa Rosa Island, Florida? It’s in the name. The Island is named for St. Rose de Viterbo (1235-1252), an Italian Catholic saint. During Frederick II’s campaign against Pope Gregory IX, Rose, then 12-years old, preached against submission to the emperor, resulting in the banishment of her family. The Florida 40-mile barrier island is the location of the communities of Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach and Okaloosa Island. The triptych digital image is my interpretation of this connection. For some interesting information, recreational, beach, reading Allen Morris’ FLORIDA PLACE NAMES is a must. (Thanks to Marta Jelen for use of portrait)
